Should you ever find the check engine light on, do this first, but not that....

Many drivers near Orange County NY visit the local AAA Certified location known as Dolson Auto & Tire for service. But sometimes they try other means. In this case a young man who wanted to try to fix it himself, and wait until you see what happened!

So this guy walks into a auto parts store and says "hey can you scan my check engine light to see whats wrong with my car?" So their little scanner says "you need to replace this sensor and that...." ...
This is not the lead up to a joke, BTW. The parts store tells him their diagnostic and gives a printout of  possible parts  the salesperson sells hims some parts.

The fellow arrives at Dolson Auto & Tire asking to have his parts installed. In this case the engine manifold is in the way of the part and the factory repair manual says it must be removed and new gaskets installed - that would require a trip back to the parts store again for the proper gasket set and more money. But wait .... theres more!

The manager at the Dolson Auto & Tire says hold a minute - why do you need your parts put in? The guy explains himself and what the parts store sold him. The manager says wait - something is not right here, its unlikely thats the case.

He checks a few things and gets a description of the actual issues the customer is experiencing while driving. That prompts a couple more inspections just as a courtesy. Now, normally all diagnostic time is charged but this simple looks wich they do for our customers.

What he found was simple and amazing.....

After a short "repair" if you even call it that - the gentleman was back on the road for only $10 and the request that he stop back in a week and let us know what happened. You will not believe this! Its good to know!

Thats right - it was just a $10 repair - all those parts the auto parts store sold him were not going to fix this problem. The auto parts store wither did not understand ow the system worked or just relied on codes for diagnosis - wich any great tech will tell you "its not the codes - its what they mean".

If you dont understand how the electronics and systems function you will be guessing - and guessing costs a lot of money.

Well,,,, guess what - it was.... just....
2 1/2  quarts of burnt off oil - thats all it was - put 2 qts oil in and the code went away.

The customer returned his parts and after spending hours driving back and forth, time, the expense - luckily he found a shop in Middletown he could trust. Dolson Auto & Tire fixed it instead of just installing his parts. Sometimes it works out, its always best to have it diagnosed first and know what is exactly malfunctioning before wasting money on parts.
