What should be done?
Reprogramming vehicles is something high tech auto repair shops like Dolson Auto can perform if the manufacturer released an update to protect people from an inadvertently idling car or truck. Hybrid electric vehicles are especially dangerous because they can sound as if they are off when in fact their engine could restart any moment.

The car company should issue updated software to shut the engine down under a number of existing inputs it already monitors. Some of this could be no activity of vehicle controls for more than 10 minutes, key fob out of range shut down, seat sensor detects no driver, or seat belt unplugged for more than a minute. Many possibilities are right there with simple software updates. Many lives could be saved.

Any window tint law

Not allowed? You can bet on it.

NY State no longer allows any side glass tint on passenger cars. The only exception is if your vehicle is labeled MPV on the vehicle identification sticker. You find the "EPA" or "NHTSA" sticker inside the door.

But there is another exception to have tinted windows. A special approval application can be completed at DMV offices. You may need more information to complete the forms. Once you are approved they will provide you some documents and a window sticker to alert police that your car may have tint. Most likely the registration record will also contain some information. After that you may provide this info to the inspection station beforehand.

Tint meters have shown that most cars are built with glass that already blocks nearly 20% of the light and any tint applied has generally failed the test. The tint meters used are the same models approved by the State and used by police.

Tinted Windows look good, no doubt, however lawmakers have created new law governing this issue to protect our police offices and make life safer for all of us.

Tune Up and why spark plugs dont last as long

Spark Plugs in modern engines wear

May, 2018
Middletown NY -

Seen here is a pair of Ford Motorcraft spark plugs, a new one on the right and the ones coming out after 60,000 miles on the left.

We are seeing modern engines wearing spark plugs away more quickly, Spark energy is hotter and fires many multiple times per cylinder event these days, but there is more! Modern engines may have multiple "ignition events" using new techniques.

Some of these new techniques are multiple fuel injector firing times on the same engine stroke, multiple spark events at multiple durations and multiple combustion events, all occurring within milliseconds.

If you can imagine how fast this is happening in a running engine - each time the spark goes off some of the plug is worn away. The gap becomes wider, requiring more current from the ignition system. Heat rises and electricity begins to look for a easier pathway. Eventually the plugs fire improperly and you get a miss-fire and catalytic converter damage begins.

As soon as you see a check engine light or feel a shake or hesitation in your engine bring the car in for an analysis - it could save you a bundle on larger repairs by performing the maintenance on time. Dont let your spark plugs look like this set!
