Spark Plugs in modern engines wear
May, 2018
Middletown NY -
Seen here is a pair of Ford Motorcraft spark plugs, a new one on the right and the ones coming out after 60,000 miles on the left.
We are seeing modern engines wearing spark plugs away more quickly, Spark energy is hotter and fires many multiple times per cylinder event these days, but there is more! Modern engines may have multiple "ignition events" using new techniques.
Some of these new techniques are multiple fuel injector firing times on the same engine stroke, multiple spark events at multiple durations and multiple combustion events, all occurring within milliseconds.
If you can imagine how fast this is happening in a running engine - each time the spark goes off some of the plug is worn away. The gap becomes wider, requiring more current from the ignition system. Heat rises and electricity begins to look for a easier pathway. Eventually the plugs fire improperly and you get a miss-fire and catalytic converter damage begins.
As soon as you see a check engine light or feel a shake or hesitation in your engine bring the car in for an analysis - it could save you a bundle on larger repairs by performing the maintenance on time. Dont let your spark plugs look like this set!
